That all said, I would suggest playing through a different cruiser line (maybe Japanese or French) before getting the Pensacola at tier 7. All in all, they make for an excellent learning ground. You'll bully destroyers, you'll be able to duel most same tier cruisers 1v1, and you'll learn in which situations to engage enemy battleships. Particularly the StLouis at tier 3 and Cleveland at tier 6 are monsters. Up until tier 6 they are a very strong and forgiving line of cruisers which will really show you what a cruiser can and cannot do. My recommendation would be to start up the USN (American) line. You will simply get frustrated and not learn much in the process. I like them, but they are totally unforgiving and I would not recommend them to new players. Moreover, even when the german cruisers get better at tiers 5+, some of them are still very squishy, particularly the tier 5 and 6 cruisers. Needless to say, more fits of rage followed. I was incredibly happy once the grind was over and I could transition to the Karlsruhe, only to discover that it was even worse. I had several violent fits while playing the Kolberg, some involving shouting, crying, and wooden cooking spoons. That said, several of the lower tier ships (particularly the tier 3 and tier 4 cruisers) are horrifically bad. The german cruiser line has a fearsome reputation at higher tiers, and I am finding a lot of fun with it myself while grinding.
